Spithari Marathon Project

The group “Spithari” is housed at Marathon. It is an open collective and started in 2011. They also cooperate with other collectives, such as ”Rizari”. They have leased an area of around 7.5 acres. The reason they decided to do this is that they wanted to wean from the system in some way, to create a form of a society released from this whole market game and the pursuit of profit.

At the level of energy they are autonomous to a great extent. As for the accommodation, they have built some domes, geodesic domes ̇ cheap structures that can accommodate several people. There is also an aquaponic system. Last year they have focused a lot on nutrition, how people who live there permanently could be nutritionally self-sufficient.

When we visited the "Spithari" what we did mostly was to help with the harvesting. The guys there predicted that with 100-120 kg flour that would come from wheat could make pasta and bread. Until then the self-sufficiency was reaching around 20-30% - they made salads with their own vegetables. By harvesting and flour, it would reach around 50%.

Let us note also that two things Spithari likes very much are music and hospitality. And when these two are combined, anyone can spend there wonderful nights…

Finally, what they support as collective is that there are loads of things that anyone can apply to the city in order to conquer a degree of nutritional or energy autonomy. The things you discover about yourself you discover them practically.
