Festival of Solidarity and Collaborative Economy :

Another world already exists (and is celebrated every October in Athens!)

The Festival of Solidarity and Collaborative Economy was born in 2011 by members of collectives and citizen initiatives who share a common vision towards transition towards “another world”, a world where human values count much more than profit making, based on participation and cooperation, self-management, solidarity, sustainability, self-sufficiency and respect of man and nature alike. The event aims to become a meeting point for interaction among initiatives and grassroots movements in order to create potential collective projects.

As the Festival focuses on the self-organised citizen-driven movement which is taking place in Greece and worldwide and the idea of our initiative plays also with the idea of searching and creating new ways of thinking, living and working, we were highly interested in participating as volunteers to help this great project move forward.

The Festival comprised various events and activities like thematic discussions which served as a platform where we could exchange experiences and concerns among our groups (such as the one about a successful example of a time bank in Catalunya).

DIY workshops where we had the learning of new practices, exchange of knowledge and experiences, creative workshops for children, artistic events (concerts as well as juggling, acrobatics, fire show), exchange bazaar, market place and a collective kitchen...

We were inspired by speakers from Catalunya (Joan and Gorka) who presented the Integrated Catalan Cooperative that aims at networking beteen collectives and initiatives, facilitating their activities by offering them a platform to work in the savage free market...

It was a great opportunity for all of us, not only because of the importance of informing citizens about a different world, a world that is not only feasible and imperative, but one that already exists. It was great, as it offered a lot of food for thought as well as a strong willing for more action. Actions that even if they seem small, it is because we haven’t discovered their impact beyond our local area…
